Why this order?

Wings of Fire is one of the simplest long series to read in order: just follow publication. Tui T. Sutherland built the saga in tidy arcs of five books, and each arc is its own self-contained prophecy with a fresh set of dragonet narrators, so you never feel dropped into the middle of someone else's story.

Arc one, The Dragonet Prophecy, follows the original five, Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny, as they are raised underground to fulfill a prophecy and end a generations-long war. Arc two, The Jade Mountain Prophecy, jumps forward to a new generation at the Jade Mountain Academy, where the next batch of dragonets faces a darker, more personal threat. Arc three widens the world across the sea to the dragons of Pantala, and arc four, the Forgotten Isles Prophecy, opens fresh territory again starting in 2026. Each book rotates to a different protagonist, so reading them in sequence keeps the relationships and rising stakes lined up correctly.

The one thing newcomers ask about is where the extra books go. The Legends titles are prequels and companions rather than part of the numbered count, and they do not belong together. Darkstalker (2016) tells the ancient backstory of the villain arc two revolves around, so it lands best right after you finish arc two. Dragonslayer (2020) shifts to a human point of view and was published during the Pantala arc, so it pairs naturally with arc three rather than sitting before it.

Two more strands round things out. The Winglets are short e-story novellas that fill in side characters and history; they are entirely optional and best saved for after the main arcs. The graphic novels, illustrated by Mike Holmes with colors by Maarta Laiho, adapt the main books one at a time in the exact same order, so they are a great alternate format rather than new content.

If you like this, Sutherland also co-created the Spirit Animals and Pet Trouble series, and fans of dragon-driven middle-grade often move on to Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle (Eragon).

Frequently asked questions

What order should I read Wings of Fire in?

Read by publication arc: The Dragonet Prophecy (Books 1-5), then The Jade Mountain Prophecy (Books 6-10), then the Lost Continent arc (Books 11-15), and now the Forgotten Isles arc (Books 16+). Slot the Legends prequels in alongside the arcs they connect to: Darkstalker after Book 10, and Dragonslayer with the Lost Continent arc.

How many Wings of Fire books are there?

The numbered series spans 15 books across three completed prophecy arcs of five, with a fourth arc, The Forgotten Isles Prophecy, now under way (starting with The Hybrid Prince in 2026). There are also two Legends companion novels, Darkstalker (2016) and Dragonslayer (2020), several short Winglets e-stories, and graphic-novel adaptations.

Do I need to read the Legends books?

No, they are optional prequels and companions. Darkstalker (2016) explores the backstory of a key Arc 2 villain and pairs well after Book 10, while Dragonslayer (2020) adds a human perspective and fits alongside the Lost Continent arc.

Where do the Winglets and graphic novels fit?

The Winglets are optional short e-stories best saved for after the main arcs. The graphic novels, illustrated by Mike Holmes with colors by Maarta Laiho, adapt the main books in the same order and are an alternate format, not new content.

Who wrote Wings of Fire?

Tui T. Sutherland, who has also co-created the Spirit Animals and Pet Trouble series. Wings of Fire is her best-known work, aimed at middle-grade readers.

Can each arc be read on its own?

Each five-book arc tells a self-contained prophecy with its own narrators, but the world, characters, and stakes build continuously, so starting from Book 1 gives the full experience.
