Why this order?
The good news for newcomers is that Outlander is one of the rare long series where publication order and reading order are the same thing. Start with Outlander (1991), where WWII nurse Claire Randall touches a standing stone at Craigh na Dun and falls back to 1743 Scotland, and simply move forward through the nine main novels. Diana Gabaldon wrote them in this sequence, the emotional arc is built around it, and the historical timeline marches steadily forward from the Jacobite rising toward the American Revolution. There is no prequel to read first and no recommended shuffle.
The one real complication is the spin-off material. Gabaldon also writes the Lord John Grey series, following a recurring supporting character, plus a growing shelf of novellas and short fiction (collected in things like "Seven Stones to Stand or Fall"). These slot into the chronology between the big books, and some readers love weaving them in for extra context on Lord John, Roger, and others. But they are genuinely optional: you can finish the main saga without ever touching them and miss nothing essential to Claire and Jamie's story. Treat them as side quests, not required reading.
A few practical notes. The books get long and dense fast, with multiple points of view and braided historical threads, so the audiobooks (narrated by Davina Porter) are a popular way through. The Starz television adaptation follows the main novels and is a fine companion, though it diverges in places. If you enjoy this blend of meticulous history and sweeping romance, readers often move on to Ken Follett's Kingsbridge novels or Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction next.

Frequently asked questions
How many Outlander books are there?
There are nine main novels, from Outlander (1991) through Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (2021). Diana Gabaldon has confirmed a tenth book will conclude the main saga, plus separate Lord John spin-off novels and several novellas.
What order should I read Outlander in?
Read the nine main novels in publication order, starting with Outlander, then Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, An Echo in the Bone, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.
Do I need to read the Lord John Grey books?
No. The Lord John series and the novellas are optional side-reads that add depth to supporting characters and slot into the chronology, but the main Claire and Jamie story is complete without them.
Is the Outlander series finished?
Not yet. Nine main novels are published, and Diana Gabaldon has said a tenth book will be the final installment of the core saga. No firm release date has been confirmed.
Should I watch the Starz show or read the books first?
Either works. The Starz series adapts the main novels fairly faithfully but condenses and changes details, so book-first readers often prefer the extra depth on the page.
Where does Outlander start in history?
The first novel opens in 1945 just after WWII, then sends Claire back to 1743 Scotland during the Jacobite era. The series moves forward in time toward the American Revolution.
