Why this order?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is unusual among long anime: there is really only one correct way to watch it, and it happens to be both the release order and the chronological order. Hirohiko Araki's manga is told in numbered "Parts," each following a new member of the Joestar bloodline across a different era, and the modern David Production anime (which began in 2012) adapts those Parts one after another. So watching in broadcast order also walks you through the story in the order events actually happen.

Start with the 2012 season, which bundles the first two Parts. Phantom Blood introduces Jonathan Joestar and his rival Dio in 1880s England, and it is short and a little old-fashioned on purpose. Battle Tendency jumps to the 1930s with the far more popular Joseph Joestar and is where many fans feel the series fully clicks. From there each entry stands as its own season: Stardust Crusaders (Joseph's grandson Jotaro and the introduction of "Stands"), Diamond Is Unbreakable (a small-town murder mystery), Golden Wind (the Italian mafia arc), and Stone Ocean (Jotaro's daughter Jolyne, released by Netflix in 2021-2022).

The one gotcha: do not skip Phantom Blood even though it is the weakest-looking Part. Its events directly set up the villain and the bloodline stakes that pay off across every later season, especially Stardust Crusaders and Stone Ocean. Each Part introduces a new JoJo, but the characters, powers, and grudges genuinely connect.

Looking ahead, Part 7, Steel Ball Run, is widely considered the manga's high point and is the most-requested future adaptation, though it technically reboots the universe. If you enjoy long, evolving shonen sagas in the vein of Naruto or One Piece, JoJo's rewards watching it straight through.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in?

Watch by Part in this order: Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond Is Unbreakable, Golden Wind, then Stone Ocean. This is both the release order and the chronological order.

How many seasons and parts of JoJo's anime are there?

The modern anime covers six Parts. Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency share the 2012 season, followed by Stardust Crusaders, Diamond Is Unbreakable, Golden Wind, and Stone Ocean for a total of six story arcs.

Can I skip Phantom Blood?

It's best not to. Phantom Blood is short but it sets up Dio and the Joestar bloodline stakes that pay off across every later Part, especially Stardust Crusaders and Stone Ocean.

Do the Parts connect or is each one separate?

They connect. Each Part follows a new member of the Joestar family in a new era, but characters, powers, and grudges carry over between them.

Is Part 7, Steel Ball Run, animated yet?

Not yet. Steel Ball Run is the most-requested future adaptation and is highly regarded in manga form, but it reboots the universe and has not been announced as an anime.

Where can I stream JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

Parts 1 through 5 stream on Crunchyroll (and Hulu in some regions), while Stone Ocean (Part 6) is a Netflix release.
