Jack Ryan Movies in Order
Seven films, one four-season series and six tie-in games, plus an unreleased Rainbow Six: 15 entries in all. Only two chains have prerequisites, Patriot Games into Clear and Present Danger, and the Prime Video series into Ghost War (2026). Everything else is a clean starting point, so release order works.

Why this order?
Jack Ryan is not one story, so the real question is not what order but whether order matters at all. Across seven films, a four-season Prime Video series and five actors in the role, only two chains actually have prerequisites. Patriot Games (1992) runs straight into Clear and Present Danger (1994): same director, same Ryan, same wife and daughter, one continuous story told twice. And the Prime Video series runs straight into Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026), which opens on a Ryan who has already walked away from the CIA and plays cold if you have not seen how he got there. Everything else is a clean jumping-on point. The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of All Fears, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and the series itself all assume you know nothing.
That is why our recommended order is simply release order for the screen entries. It works because the in-universe setting years happen to line up with it. Red October is a period piece set in November 1984 and says so on a title card. The two Harrison Ford films sit in the early and mid 1990s. The Sum of All Fears is explicitly present-day 2002. Shadow Recruit is contemporary to its 2014 release, and the series plus Ghost War carry you to now.
Two traps catch almost everyone. First, the Patriot Games direction flip: the novel is a prequel to The Hunt for Red October, but the 1992 film is a sequel, with Ryan already out of the CIA and teaching at Annapolis. Import the book chronology onto the films and you watch those two backwards. Second, The Sum of All Fears is not a prequel. A visibly younger Ben Affleck invites that reading, but the film is a reboot set in 2002, with a Ryan who is single and only starting to date Cathy, which cannot possibly come before a 1984-set film where he is already married with a daughter.
Two side branches stay optional. Without Remorse (2021) is a Ryanverse film with no Jack Ryan in it at all: it is John Clark's origin story, a separate continuity, and sharing a streaming home with the Krasinski show does not connect the two. The tie-in games are a completist wing, and three of the six are entirely different games that all call themselves The Hunt for Red October. Watch the films first. The games are trivia, not homework.

Frequently asked questions
How many Jack Ryan movies are there?
Six films star Jack Ryan himself: The Hunt for Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Sum of All Fears (2002), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026). A seventh, Without Remorse (2021), is set in the same universe but has no Ryan in it. Add the four-season Prime Video series (30 episodes, 2018 to 2023), six tie-in games, and an unreleased Rainbow Six film, and the full list runs to 15 entries.
What order should I watch the Jack Ryan movies in?
Release order: The Hunt for Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Sum of All Fears (2002), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), then the Prime Video series, then Ghost War (2026). It works because the in-universe setting years line up with the release dates, so you never jump around the timeline. Without Remorse and the games sit outside that spine and can be picked up whenever you like.
Do I need to watch anything before Jack Ryan: Ghost War?
Yes, and this is the only place in the franchise where the answer is a firm yes. Ghost War is a direct continuation of the Prime Video series, so watch all four seasons first. The film opens on a Ryan who has already left the CIA and is working in hedge fund risk management, with Greer sitting in the deputy director chair Ryan gave up, and none of that lands if you have not seen the show. The five earlier films are irrelevant to it.
Is Patriot Games a prequel to The Hunt for Red October?
The novel is; the 1992 film is not. Tom Clancy wrote Patriot Games as a prequel, set years before Red October, but the film flips the direction: Ryan has already left the CIA and is teaching at Annapolis, so it plays as a sequel to the 1990 movie. This is the single most common mix-up in the franchise. If you go by book chronology you will watch the films backwards, so watch Red October first.
Is The Sum of All Fears a prequel with a younger Jack Ryan?
No, it is a reboot. Ben Affleck being visibly younger than Harrison Ford invites the prequel reading, but the 2002 film is explicitly set in present-day 2002, with a Ryan who is single and only beginning to date Cathy. That cannot come before a film set in 1984 where he is already married with a daughter. Its setting is later than all three earlier films, and nothing from them carries over, right down to Morgan Freeman's DCI William Cabot replacing Admiral Greer.
Do I have to watch the movies before the Jack Ryan TV series?
No. The Prime Video series is the third reboot of the character and its own self-contained timeline, built from Ryanverse characters rather than adapted from a specific novel. It assumes you have seen none of the films. Start at season 1, episode 1 if the show is what you came for, and treat the movies as an optional back catalogue.
Is Without Remorse connected to the Jack Ryan series on Prime Video?
No, despite both being on Prime Video. Without Remorse is the origin story of John Clark, played by Michael B. Jordan, and Jack Ryan does not appear at all. It is Paramount-produced, Amazon-distributed and a completely separate continuity. It is also the third unrelated screen version of John Clark, after Willem Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger and Liev Schreiber in The Sum of All Fears, so none of the three connect to each other either.
Who has played Jack Ryan?
Five actors. Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October (1990), Harrison Ford in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears (2002), Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), and John Krasinski across the Prime Video series (2018 to 2023) and Ghost War (2026). Ford is the only one to play the part twice on film, and Krasinski has now logged the most hours in the role by a wide margin.
Is there another Jack Ryan movie coming after Ghost War?
Nothing is confirmed for Jack Ryan himself. Ghost War ends with Ryan accepting the CIA deputy director post, which leaves an obvious door open, but no sequel has been announced. The only Ryanverse film actually in development is Rainbow Six, a follow-up to Without Remorse with Michael B. Jordan returning as John Clark and Chad Stahelski attached to direct, and it has no release date, no confirmed production start and no Jack Ryan in it.
Do the Jack Ryan games matter to the story?
Not really, and you can skip all six. Three of them are entirely different games that share the title The Hunt for Red October (a 1987 submarine sim based on the novel, a 1990 Grandslam action game based on the film, and a 1991 console game also based on the film). The Cardinal of the Kremlin (1991) is the only one adapting a Jack Ryan novel directly. The Rainbow Six (1998) and The Sum of All Fears (2002) tie-ins star John Clark rather than Ryan and tell their own stories. None of them are canon to any film.
