Why this order?

For most people, release order is the right way to watch Harry Potter. The eight core films were made back-to-back over a decade and follow Harry, Ron and Hermione straight through, so watching them as they came out means you see the young cast grow up in real time and meet every plot reveal exactly when audiences did. Start with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (called Sorcerer's Stone in the US) and run through to Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The story is one continuous arc, so this is also the order we set as the default.

The wrinkle is the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. These three films are part of the same Wizarding World but are set in the 1920s and 1930s, decades before Harry is even born, following magizoologist Newt Scamander and the rise of the dark wizard Grindelwald. By release date they land after the main saga (2016–2022), but by in-universe timeline they come first.

That is why we offer a chronological order. If you want to follow the Wizarding World as events actually unfold, watch the three Fantastic Beasts films first, then the eight Harry Potter films in their original sequence. It is a fun re-watch path once you already know Harry's story, since several characters and references pay off better with hindsight.

Our recommendation: first-timers should ignore the timeline and watch in release order, because the core eight films were designed to be seen that way and the Fantastic Beasts movies assume some familiarity with the wider world. Save the chronological route for a second pass. If you enjoy this style of connected franchise, the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars saga raise the same release-versus-chronological question.

Frequently asked questions

How many Harry Potter movies are there?

There are eight Harry Potter films, from Philosopher’s Stone (2001) to Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). Counting the three Fantastic Beasts prequels, the wider Wizarding World has eleven films.

What order should I watch Harry Potter in?

Watch the eight core films in release order, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and ending with Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This matches the continuous story and is best for first-timers.

Should I watch the Fantastic Beasts movies before Harry Potter?

For a first watch, no. They’re set decades earlier but assume familiarity with the world. Watch them after the main eight, or first only on a chronological re-watch.

Why is the first movie sometimes called Sorcerer’s Stone?

It’s the same film. The book and movie were retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the US market; the rest of the world uses Philosopher’s Stone.

Are Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter the same franchise?

Yes. Both belong to the Wizarding World based on J.K. Rowling’s work. Fantastic Beasts is a prequel series following Newt Scamander and a young Albus Dumbledore.

Is there a difference between release order and chronological order?

Yes. Release order watches all eight Harry Potter films first, then Fantastic Beasts. Chronological order puts the three Fantastic Beasts films first, since they’re set in the 1920s–30s.
