Why this order?

For most people, release order is the right way to watch Harry Potter. The eight core films adapt the seven Harry Potter books (the seventh split across two films), were made back-to-back over a decade and follow Harry, Ron and Hermione straight through, so watching them as they came out means you see the young cast grow up in real time and meet every plot reveal exactly when audiences did. Start with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (called Sorcerer's Stone in the US) and run through to Deathly Hallows, Part 2. The story is one continuous arc, so this is also the order we set as the default. The wrinkle is the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. These three films are part of the same Wizarding World but are set in the 1920s and 1930s, decades before Harry is even born, following magizoologist Newt Scamander and the rise of Gellert Grindelwald, the villain of the trilogy. By release date they land after the main saga (2016 to 2022), but by in-universe timeline they come first. That is why we offer a chronological order. If you want to follow the Wizarding World as events actually unfold, watch the three Fantastic Beasts films first, then the eight Harry Potter films in their original sequence. It is a fun re-watch path once you already know Harry's story, since several characters and references pay off better with hindsight. Our recommendation: first-timers should ignore the timeline and watch in release order, because the core eight films were designed to be seen that way and the Fantastic Beasts movies assume some familiarity with the wider world. Save the chronological route for a second pass. One more entry now sits on the list: the HBO series. It starts the story over from the first book with a new cast, one novel per season, and its eight-episode first season, covering Philosopher’s Stone, premieres on December 25, 2026, with a second season adapting Chamber of Secrets already filming. It is a retelling, not a sequel, so it has no place in a first watch of the films. In release order it simply comes last; in chronological order we put it straight after the film that tells the same school year, so you can choose either version of that year and skip the other.
