Fate Series Watch Order
The Fate franchise is infamous for having no single "correct" watch order. For newcomers, the cleanest path is Fate/Zero, then Unlimited Blade Works, then the Heaven's Feel film trilogy.

Why this order?
Fate is widely called the most confusing anime to start, and the reason is structural: Fate/stay night is a visual novel with three branching routes, and the anime adaptations each cover a different route rather than continuing one story. There is no canonical "season 1, season 2." That is exactly why a single recommended path is so useful, and why purists will always argue about it.
Our recommended watch order is built for a newcomer who wants the strongest experience with the least confusion: start with Fate/Zero (2011), then Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014), then the three Heaven's Feel films (2017, 2019, 2020). Fate/Zero is a prequel by a different studio that sets up the world, the Holy Grail War, and characters like Kiritsugu and Saber with stunning production. From there, Unlimited Blade Works is the most accessible full route and the natural lead-in to Heaven's Feel, which is the darkest, most emotionally rewarding finale and assumes you already know the cast.
The main debate is where to begin. Some purists insist you watch the original 2006 Fate/stay night first, because Fate/Zero spoils a key reveal that the 2006 series treats as a mystery. Others argue Zero-first is smoother because the older animation and pacing of the 2006 adaptation can turn newcomers off. We list the 2006 series as an optional historical watch rather than a required step, since UBW (2014) covers similar ground far better.
Note that Fate has many spin-offs — Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/Grand Order (the mega-popular mobile game and its anime), and the magical-girl spin-off Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. These are separate side-stories, not part of the core Fate/stay night saga, so we keep them off the main list to stay focused.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I watch Fate in?
For newcomers, start with Fate/Zero (2011), then Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014), then the three Heaven's Feel films (2017-2020). The original 2006 Fate/stay night is optional.
How many seasons and episodes are there?
There's no traditional season count. The core saga is Fate/Zero (25 episodes across two cours), Unlimited Blade Works (26 episodes across two cours), and three Heaven's Feel movies. The 2006 series adds 24 episodes.
Should I watch Fate/Zero or Fate/stay night first?
We recommend Fate/Zero first for its stronger production and worldbuilding. Purists note that Zero spoils one reveal from the 2006 series, but most newcomers find Zero-first smoother.
Do I need to watch the 2006 Fate/stay night?
No. The 2014 Unlimited Blade Works covers similar ground with far better animation. We list the 2006 series as an optional historical watch only.
Where do Fate/Grand Order and other spin-offs fit?
They don't fit the core order. Fate/Grand Order, Fate/Apocrypha, and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya are separate side-stories you can watch later, independent of the main saga.
Is there really no correct order for Fate?
Correct. Fate/stay night is a branching visual novel, and each adaptation covers a different route rather than continuing one story, so fans genuinely disagree on the ideal starting point.
