Why this order?
The Fast & Furious saga is mostly easy to follow if you watch it the way it came out, but it hides one of the most notorious continuity tricks in modern blockbuster cinema. Release order is the order we recommend for almost everyone: start with The Fast and the Furious in 2001 and work straight through to Fast X in 2023. This is how the films were made and marketed, so jokes, callbacks, and the slow shift from street-racing crime drama to globe-trotting action spectacle all land in the intended sequence.
The twist is Tokyo Drift. It was released third, in 2006, with a nearly all-new cast and seemingly no connection to Dom and Brian. Years later the saga revealed that Tokyo Drift actually takes place much later on its internal timeline, after the events of Fast & Furious 6. That is why a chronological order rearranges the early films: 1, 2, then the 2009 and 2011 and 2013 entries, and only then Tokyo Drift, followed by Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, F9, and Fast X. Han's story is the key, and watching this way makes one major character beat in Furious 7 click into place.
Hobbs & Shaw sits outside both spines. It is a 2019 spinoff built around Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, and it leans into sci-fi action that the main films mostly avoid, so we list it as a side branch rather than slotting it into the numbered saga.
If you enjoy long interconnected action franchises like this, the Mission: Impossible series and the John Wick films scratch a similar itch, while the Jason Bourne movies offer a grittier, more grounded take on the same globe-trotting spy-action energy.

Frequently asked questions
How many Fast & Furious movies are there?
There are eleven films: ten numbered/main-saga entries from 2001 to 2023 plus the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw (2019). A direct sequel to Fast X is planned to close out the saga.
What order should I watch Fast & Furious in?
For most viewers, watch in release order from The Fast and the Furious (2001) through Fast X (2023). That preserves the intended pacing, callbacks, and character arcs.
Why is Tokyo Drift out of order?
Tokyo Drift was released third in 2006 but its story takes place after Fast & Furious 6 (2013). The saga later retconned its timeline, so chronologically it sits sixth despite coming out early.
Where does Hobbs & Shaw fit in the timeline?
Hobbs & Shaw is a standalone spinoff that runs parallel to the main saga and isn't required viewing. We list it as a side branch rather than part of the numbered story.
Should I watch in release order or chronological order?
Release order is best for first-timers. Try chronological order on a rewatch to see how Tokyo Drift and Han's story slot into the timeline before Furious 7.
Do I need to watch Tokyo Drift to follow the saga?
Yes, eventually. It seems disconnected at first, but its events and the character Han become central to the plots of Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7.
