Why this order?

There is really only one Cyberpunk video game to play: Cyberpunk 2077 (2020), CD Projekt Red's open-world RPG adapted from Mike Pondsmith's tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020. So "what order" is less about sequels and more about how the pieces fit together. The good news is that it is simple, and you do not need any prior knowledge to dive in.

Our default is Release order, which doubles as the recommended path. Start with the base game, then add the 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty. Phantom Liberty is not a separate title or a sequel; it is a large story DLC that unlocks inside the main campaign once you reach a certain point in Act 2. You can only access it from within an existing save, so trying to play it "first" is impossible. Buy the base game (or the Ultimate Edition that bundles both) and let the spy-thriller Dogtown arc surface naturally as you progress.

The other piece is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022), the Netflix anime from Studio Trigger. It is a standalone side story set in Night City with its own characters, so it sits outside the game's order entirely. Many players watch it before or after the game for extra emotional weight, since locations and gear overlap, but neither requires the other.

A sequel, codenamed Project Orion, is in active development at CD Projekt Red, though it has no confirmed title or release window yet. Until then, the order is short and forgiving: play the base game, embrace Phantom Liberty when it appears, and treat Edgerunners as essential mood-setting on the side. If you enjoy the setting's tabletop roots, Pondsmith's Cyberpunk RED is the current pen-and-paper edition.

Frequently asked questions

How many Cyberpunk games are there?

There is one main video game, Cyberpunk 2077 (2020), plus its major expansion Phantom Liberty (2023). A sequel codenamed Project Orion is in development. The franchise also began as Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG.

What order should I play Cyberpunk 2077 in?

Just play Cyberpunk 2077 first. Phantom Liberty is a story expansion that unlocks from within the base campaign in Act 2, so it naturally comes after you have started. The Ultimate Edition bundles both.

Is Phantom Liberty a separate game or a sequel?

Neither. Phantom Liberty is a paid story expansion (DLC) that adds the Dogtown district and a spy-thriller questline inside Cyberpunk 2077. You access it from an existing save, not as a standalone title.

Do I need to watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners before playing?

No. The 2022 Netflix anime is a standalone side story set in Night City with its own cast. It is not required for the game, but it enriches the world. Watch it before or after, whichever you prefer.

Is Cyberpunk based on a tabletop game?

Yes. Cyberpunk 2077 adapts Mike Pondsmith's pen-and-paper RPG, originally Cyberpunk 2013/2020. The current tabletop edition is Cyberpunk RED, which bridges the timeline up to the video game.

Is there a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel?

A sequel codenamed Project Orion is in active development at CD Projekt Red. As of early 2026 it has no confirmed title or release date, so Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty remain the complete game experience.
